What To Do This Father’s Day
To me, Father’s Day has always meant getting together with extended family for lunch, catching up with each other’s lives and sharing delicious homemade food.
This year, COVID-19 has hit many families hard. It has affected Australians financially and restricted what we have been able to do and where we have been able to go. You might be considering having a smaller get-together this year than usual, or taking it outdoors into nature to avoid crowds.
Here are some fun and free or low-cost things to do this Father’s Day:
· Get some exercise and fresh air by going on a hike with the family. Check out the Royal National Park, Blue Mountains or Wollemi National Park – they all have a bunch of different options for hikes with varying levels of difficulty and length. Many hiking spots have parking available. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it.
· Beach day! As the weather is warming up, why not hit the beach. Some lesser-known but still stunning beaches are Chinamans Beach in Mosman, Jibbon Beach in Royal National Park and Milk Beach in Vaucluse.
· Have a family game night. Go back to basics with some classics like Jenga or charades, or try some new, exciting games like Codenames or Ellen’s “Heads Up”, which you can play by downloading the free app. Just stay away from Monopoly – it’s been known to tear families apart!
· Get together some art and craft supplies and get messy! Encourage the family to express themselves creatively. The kids will have the chance to make their own homemade cards or gifts for Dad.
· Fire up the grill and have a barbeque at home. Take the opportunity to teach the little ones (safely) about grilling and how to get that amazing char-grill on your meat and veggies.
· Drop into the local pool for a relaxing swim. Get out the unicorn- and donut-shaped pool floats and don’t forget to pack the sunscreen!
· Go camping. If you and your family are a fan of the outdoors, make some memories camping as a family – whether that be just in your backyard or in a campground. Pack some marshmallows to roast over a campfire and tell some spooky stories (but maybe not too spooky, otherwise the kids will never get to sleep!)
We hope these suggestions have inspired you – you can still have tonnes of fun on a budget! We wish you a safe and fun Father’s Day.
